Mike Milstead was born into the law enforcement family as the son of
Highway Patrolman Jim Milstead, Mike joined the Sioux Falls Police Explorer
program in 1969 while in the 9th grade. He started his full time career
with the Sioux Falls Police Department in 1973 and worked for that agency
for over 24 years before being sworn in as Sheriff of Minnehaha County
in May of 1997. The Sheriff’s Office employs over 200 staff and
is responsible for the operation of a new 400 bed direct supervision
jail, 150 bed work release facility, Metro Communications, and full service
Patrol, Investigations, Warrant and Civil divisions. The Sheriff’s
Office also contracts as the local law enforcement agency in the cities
of Dell Rapids, Hartford, Humboldt, Crooks, Colton, Baltic, and Valley
Springs, in addition to having contract security duties at the S.D. Air
National Guard Base and S.D. Army National Guard Housing Facility. Sheriff
Milstead is on the Executive Board of the Midwest HIDTA and is active
with the U.S. Attorney’s Anti-Terrorism Task Force and the FBI’s
Joint Terrorism Task Force. He is also very active in the community and
serves on a number of non-profit board of directors. Sheriff Milstead
also volunteers as a YMCA basketball coach and high school mentor.
