Mark Kessler took office as the Sheriff of Hanson County in January 2003. Sheriff Kessler has been involved in South Dakota law enforcement for over 20 years, starting out as a reserve officer with the Spearfish Police Department then serving as a patrolman and corporal with the Mitchell Police Department before becoming a deputy with the Hanson County Sheriff’s Office. While at the Mitchell Police Department, Mark was a field training officer, a firearms instructor, a defensive tactics instructor, assistant team leader on the Emergency Response Unit, and a shift supervisor. Mark holds a bachelors degree in communications from Black Hills State University. He is active in the community through membership in the Knights of Columbus, Maher Council, and Gun Owners of America. As Sheriff of Hanson County, Mark has one deputy to assist him in his duties. Mark has three children.
