Doug was appointed as the Beadle County Sheriff in March 2010 and won election to that office later that fall. He began his law enforcement career in 1995 having worked 9 years for the Huron Police Department and 6 years for the Beadle County Sheriffs Office. During that time he held many positions from dispatcher, police officer, deputy sheriff, DARE instructor, school resource officer, and as Chief Deputy. As Sheriff he oversees a staff of 25 and operates a 62 bed jail and 11 bed juvenile detention center. Professionally he has been a member of the SD Peace Officers Association, SD Sheriffs’ Association, and Fraternal Order of Police.
Doug has served as youth leader for the Riverview Methodist Church, board member of the local emergency food shelter, current and former board member of the Pheasants Forever, member of Wild Turkey Federation, vice-president and coach for the Huron Hockey Association, supervisor for the Huron High School Intramural basketball program, little league coach, and as a 9th grade football coach.
